“Never work with animals or children, the old adage goes.”. Not many shoots do I get through without someone mentioning this, their tongue firmly planted in their cheek, while we all try to catch the twirling whirling small people just long enough to get that one photo. The one where everyone is smiling and looking at the camera.
But you know what? That shot where every one is looking at the camera with perfect blank smiles and perfect blank eyes, that only ever happened once (without careful orchestration, anyway) in the history of real people, and that is why it made its way onto said card/advert/american sitcom. The only kids who do that naturally are those who already have a fantastic Hollywood career, and surely you know that all those agreeable 4 year olds are actually played by short 7 year olds. Having said that, we always try to get a couple of these shots. It is after all, what many relatives would love for their mantelpiece, and that is a great reason alone to try to capture it. Sometimes it happens right away, and sometimes it takes a little while. Sometimes it takes longer and you have to make a decision; to stop trying to chase the 7-seater-sedan ad moment, and return to enjoying your actual day.
I always come back to thinking this: what is the point of anything (let alone your wedding day) if it is not real? Even at it’s most fanciful, and most beautiful, and accessorised by a stunning gown and pair of rocking shoes, every minute should still be reflection of you, and the relationships and the energy that make up the fabric of your lives. We should miss nothing; the funny, the determined, the bored, the insane, the divinely inspired, the desired, the fun, the laughter, the naughty, the silly, the tears, the busy-ness, the peace. Perfectly imperfect real life.
So here is the fairy tale of Sophie and Andrew, and their beautiful children Milo and Luca, whose real life is already the happily ever after.
